The Application of Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition in Education: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract
With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, machine learning and pattern recognition have been increasingly applied in education. These technologies can analyse large amounts of learning data, support learning analytics, and improve teaching and learning processes. This paper reviews the main applications of machine learning in education, including student performance prediction, personalised learning, and intelligent educational systems. It also discusses the challenges associated with these technologies, such as data privacy, ethical concerns, and algorithmic bias. It further addresses emerging issues in generative AI, academic integrity, cross-cultural adaptation, and the gap between prediction and practical educational intervention. The study highlights both the opportunities and limitations of applying machine learning in educational environments and emphasises the importance of responsible and effective use of these technologies.
